Painting Holiday, New Dates for 2019

Alan Reed Painting Holiday

Lago di Trasimeno

Painting Holiday, New Dates for 2019.

Our Painting Holiday for June 2019 is fully booked. We have now booked a second week for another Painting Holiday, New Dates for 2019 September 21st – 28th. Already the spaces are filling quickly.

Guests will once again have the opportunity to travel around Italy with Susan and I and learn how to capture in watercolour scenes of this beautiful country. The venue is the stunning Chiesa del Carmine, a delightful, ancient church that has been tastefully restored to the highest standards right in the heart of Umbria.

You will enjoy 5* luxury for 7 nights, where we will take you to picturesque hilltop towns and villages, make pizzas, wine tasting and much more. For some of our guests, 2019 will be their 5th and 6th time with us. Non painters are more than welcome and can join in with everything mentioned above, to walking, swimming in the heated pool or enjoy a round of golf at the championship course Antognolla.

Painters from absolute beginners to advanced will have specialist tuition from myself where I draw on my 34 years professional teaching experience. Places like Perugia, Cortona, Gubbio, Lake Trasimeno, Montepulciano, Assisi, Spello, Montone and Todi are a delight to visit and to have a go at painting. Not only that, the grounds of Chiesa del Carmine and the Carmine estate offers plenty of inspiration with it’s vineyards and olive trees for those relaxing days painting in the warmth and tranquility of the countryside.

Evenings are convivial gatherings, with pre-dinner drinks taken on the terrace, followed by a delicious gourmet Italian evening meal lovingly prepared by our own Italian chefs.
In 2017 we received this lovely review about the wine tasting from one of our guests who came again this year and booked up for 2019 as soon as she returned home. To find out more about our Painting Holiday, New Dates for 2019 September 21st – 28th please contact myself or Susan on 01661 871 800 or art@alanreed.com

This was our first Watercolour Painting Holiday, but not our first wine-tasting! This time, however, it was a very different experience. The invitation to accept this late addition to our itinerary for the week was inspired. What a wonderful way to begin the week after an easy day’s travelling. Instantly, Chiesa del Carmine became more than an exquisite place to stay. The wine-tasting experience, delivered on the terrace by a well-informed Isabella, transformed the venue into a living, organic establishment where the surrounding vines and olive groves were testament to produce of the highest quality. It felt as though we were enjoying a most intimate insight into the workings of a vineyard. Isabella made it so interesting and entertaining. She was charming and welcoming, keen to answer questions, and informed in her knowledge of the intricacies of the wines we tasted. A light buffet of Italian cheeses and meats complemented the occasion, and this was one which we would happily repeat should we be privileged to visit Chiesa de Carmine a second time.

Painting Holiday

Alan Reed

Spello, Umbria

It’s only a few days now until our first Painting Holiday in Italy for 2016. All of the guests from our trip in 2015 have re-booked for another week in the 5 star luxury accomodation Chiesa del Carmine a beautifully restored ancient 13th century church.

Due to the popularity of the Painting Holiday, we have hired Chiesa del Carmine for a second week 4th – 11th June and we do have late availability.

Guests will be able to receive instruction on how to paint “en plein air” in watercolour, taking in the stunning views around the valley. We will also be going out for day trips to some of the picturesque hilltop towns and villages like Spello seen in the sketchbook watercolour above.

There are non painting guests too who are happy to enjoy relaxing in the fabulous grounds, the day trips and a round of golf at the nearby championship golf course Antognolla.

Painting Holiday in Umbria

Near Pienza, Evening Sunlight

Near Pienza, Evening Sunlight

There are only 2 double rooms and a single room left on our Painting Holiday in Umbria, Italy 9-16th May 2015.

I’m really looking forward to what promises to be a lovely time of painting “en plein air” in and around a beautiful part of Italy.

Guests will have a fabulous opportunity to brush up on their painting skills whilst enjoying a lovely spring break in the glorious Umbrian countryside.

I recently demonstrated to my Friday watercolour class how to paint the Tuscan landscape using a series of simple washes to create depth and mood. This was done over two paintings. One was of Val d’Orcia early morning. The other was a scene near Pienza capturing the early evening sunlight. I’ll be planning similar exercises for the folk coming on the Painting Holiday in Umbria.

Guests will also be able to enjoy 7 Night Luxury 5* accommodation with heated swimming pool at the enchanting Italian hideaway, 5* luxurious Chiesa del Carmine.

We will have the opportunity to explore the surrounding villages and towns, as well as enjoying ample time to capture the stunning scenery surrounding Chiesa del Carmine.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast together at the Villa, a typical day will either be spent visiting one of the nearby towns like Cortona, Assisi, Spello or Perugia, or we will spend the day painting around Chiesa del Carmine or Casa San Gabriel.
Non painting guests are also very welcome and can either join us on days out or explore for themselves the beautiful surroundings. We will endeavour to meet your every requirements.

Antognolla is a championship golf course only 10 mins drive away and golf clubs are available.

Evenings are convivial gatherings, with pre-dinner drinks taken on the terrace, followed by a delicious Italian home cooked evening meal by our own chef either at Chiesa del Carmine or at a nearby restaurant. Breakfast and evening meals are Included in the price.

Guests will need to organize their own flights and car hire. However, it may be possible to share the cost of car hire with other guests.

If you would like to find out more, then please contact Alan or Susan on 01661 871 800  or email.

Painting Holiday in Italy

Painting of Olive Trees on Location

Watercolour of Olive Trees, Villa Capanne

Painting in Italy

Alan giving an informal and positive critique of guests paintings carried out throughout the week.

We’ve just returned from a weeks Painting Holiday in Italy where we took 10 guests to stay at the luxury accommodation Villa Capanne in northern Umbria.

Whilst five of the guests were producing paintings of Italy, the others were happy to enjoy the visits to nearby towns such as Cortona, Assisi, Spello and Perugia and of course to sample the local food and wine. One of the guests enjoyed several rounds of golf at the Antognolla championship course.

To help the students with their painting “en plein air” I like to lead by example, so I did a number of watercolours in my leather-bound sketchbook and on Arches Watercolour Blocks.

Above is one of several watercolours I painted of the olive trees that grace the gardens of Villa Capanne.

At the end of the week I gave an informal and relaxed critique of the guests work carried out throughout the week.

The whole trip was such a success that we have planned a second painting holiday in Italy for 9th  – 16th May 2015.

“Thanks to Alan & Susan Reed for an amazing week’s painting holiday in Italy. Food, scenery, everything exceeded expectations! 5* would not do the week justice!! Made some lovely new friends! Thoroughly recommend it when they do their next one – but be warned – Alan can be a hard task master (in our own interest!!)”.
